Hair Extensions: Where Do They Really Come From?

Hey Glam Fam, let’s get into it—do you know where your hair extensions actually come from?

I’m Tamera Sanders, a licensed cosmetologist and the owner of Bundles and Drops of Glam. And let me tell you, I’m on a mission. There’s so much misinformation out there about hair extensions—where they’re sourced, what "Brazilian" or "Peruvian" hair really means, and whether that bundle you just bought is truly Raw, Virgin, or Remy.

So, let's keep it real and transparent. Because while this may not be the most glamorous convo, it’s definitely the most necessary one if you care about quality hair.

The Truth About Hair Extensions & Their Origins

When I started my journey in the hair industry, I knew I wanted to sell Indian Hair Extensions. Why? Because Raw Indian Hair is unmatched in quality and ethical sourcing. I’ve been working with it for almost 17 years, and over time, I’ve tested countless vendors to find the best hair extensions and wigs that meet my standards.

Here’s what most people don’t know:

👉 99% of human hair used in extensions comes from Southeast Asia and India.
👉 Brazilian, Peruvian, and Malaysian hair? Not really a thing. Natives from these regions do not cut their hair in high enough volume to supply the market.
👉 Most vendors label hair as ‘Brazilian’ or ‘Malaysian’ to make it sound more exotic, but it’s usually Chinese hair that has been processed to mimic certain textures.

Shocked? I was too when I first started digging. But trust me, I’ve done the research, so you don’t have to find real hair extensions.

The Three Types of Hair Extensions: What You Need to Know

When shopping for hair, you’ll hear a lot of terms thrown around. Let’s break it all the way down:

1️⃣ Virgin Hair (Unprocessed, Cuticle-Aligned Hair)

✅ 100% real human hair that has never been chemically processed.
✅ Cuticles remain intact, aligned, and in their natural state.
✅ Lasts the longest and blends seamlessly with natural hair.
✅ Expensive, but worth it—because high-quality hair should last!

2️⃣ Remy Hair (Lightly Processed, Cuticle-Aligned Hair)

✅ Still 100% human hair, but lightly processed after collection.
✅ Cuticles remain aligned to prevent tangling.
✅ Lasts a long time with proper care.
✅ More affordable than virgin hair, but not as long-lasting.

3️⃣ Non-Remy Hair (Non-Cuticle Aligned, Chemically Treated Hair)

🚫 Collected from random sources—cuticles are NOT aligned.
🚫 Chemically processed to make it feel silky (a.k.a. soaked in silicone).
🚫 Very difficult to color, style, or maintain long-term.
🚫 The worst type of hair—prone to tangling, matting, and looking a mess after a few washes.

🚨 If you’ve ever bought hair that started shedding and tangling like crazy after a few wears, you probably had Non-Remy Hair.

The Grading System: Is 12A Hair Really Better Than 6A?

Ever heard of 6A, 8A, 10A, or 12A hair? Let me let you in on a little secret…

📌 That grading system was NEVER made for consumers. It was created for manufacturers to categorize bundles based on hair length percentage.

For example:
🛍️ A 16-inch bundle might have 60% of 16-inch strands, 20% of 14-inch, and 20% of 12-inch strands.
🛍️ Another 16-inch bundle might have 80% of 16-inch strands and 20% of 14-inch strands.

👀 So what do vendors do? They slap a higher grade label on the bundle with longer strands and charge more—even though it’s the exact same hair.

Moral of the story? The “A” grading system is just a marketing trick. It doesn’t mean you’re getting better quality hair!

Final Thoughts: Make Informed Choices!

Next time you shop for hair extensions, don’t be fooled by fancy names or “A” grades. Ask the real questions:

✔️ Is it truly Virgin or Remy hair?
✔️ Where is it sourced from?
✔️ Will it last, or will it tangle after a few washes?

When you shop Bundles and Drops of Glam, you’re getting the best of the best—because I don’t sell anything I wouldn’t wear myself.
